About Purpleheart

Vivid purple that darkens to brown-purple over time; exceptionally hard and rot-resistant.

Purpleheart handles feel solid and confident. Hard enough to take a high polish and resist daily wear, yet workable enough that hand tools are still viable. It drills and shapes cleanly, and a finished handle requires minimal maintenance over years of use.

Purpleheart delivers extreme hardness (1,860 lbf Janka) combined with a genuinely unique color — a combination no other common handle wood offers. It's naturally rot-resistant, requires no stabilization, and is an excellent choice for outdoor and kitchen knives where both durability and visual impact matter. The rich color also makes it a standout choice for show pieces.

Grain & Figure

Purpleheart has straight to slightly interlocked grain with a fine, uniform texture. The heartwood is an unmistakable vivid violet when freshly cut, oxidizing over time to deep brownish-purple with UV exposure. The oxidation is natural and expected — most makers consider the aged color equally attractive. A UV-inhibiting topcoat slows the shift. The grain surface is typically very clean and consistent.

Stabilization & Treatment

At 1,860 lbf Janka, Purpleheart is dense enough that stabilization isn't strictly required. The wood handles moisture and daily wear well on its own. Stabilized versions are sometimes available and add an extra margin of protection, but raw Purpleheart scales have a strong track record on working knives.

At ExoticScales, we stabilize using Cactus Juice resin — the same process used by professional scale makers. Each piece is cured under vacuum and heat, producing a hard, sealed blank that machines cleanly and takes a beautiful finish. Stabilized vs raw: full comparison →

Recommended Finishes

Film finishes — CA glue, lacquer, varnish — are recommended for purpleheart to slow UV-related color shift and seal the dense surface. Oil finishes also work but may not provide adequate UV protection. Because purpleheart is naturally oily, clean, freshly-sanded surfaces are essential for proper adhesion on any finish. Allow freshly sanded surfaces a few minutes to off-gas before applying topcoat.

Available at ExoticScales

Purpleheart scales are available in 5" × 2" × ¼" and 5" × 1.5" × ¼", fitting the vast majority of full-tang knife blanks. We carry matched pairs and — where the grain allows — bookmatched pairs. Highly figured and one-of-a-kind pieces sell quickly.
