About Padauk
Brilliant orange-red that patinas to deep reddish-brown; dense enough to skip stabilization.
Padauk strikes a good balance between workability and durability. It shapes and drills easily with standard woodworking tools, takes a smooth finish without tear-out, and feels comfortable in the hand β not too heavy, not too light for full-tang knives.
Padauk is one of the best-value exotic woods for knife handles: striking orange-red color, excellent hardness (1,725 lbf), and no stabilization required. The dramatic color change over years of use and patination is a feature rather than a drawback β the aged red tones are distinctive and handsome. Padauk is practically maintenance-free and produces a handle that will be noticed.
Grain & Figure
Padauk has straight to slightly interlocked grain with a moderately coarse texture. Fresh-cut padauk is a brilliant, vivid orange-red that deepens and darkens to reddish-brown over months and years of UV exposure. The color change is characteristic and expected β aged padauk develops a rich wine-red that many makers prefer to the fresh color. The grain typically produces clean, consistent surfaces.
Stabilization & Treatment
Padauk is naturally rich in oils β the same oils that give it its distinctive luster and inherent durability also prevent stabilization resin from penetrating. This is a feature, not a limitation. Those natural oils protect the wood from moisture and give it built-in durability without any treatment. We stock Padauk raw only, which is the correct and traditional form for this species.
Recommended Finishes
Padauk's natural oils make stabilization unnecessary and mean a light finish is all that's needed. Mineral oil or paste wax maintains the natural feel. Film finishes (lacquer, CA glue) work for higher sheen but require clean, freshly-sanded surfaces for good adhesion β the natural oils can interfere if the surface has been left to oxidize. Oil finishes are the most forgiving application.
