About Cocobolo
Rich spectrum of orange-red-brown with dark streaks; naturally oily surface; exotic rosewood family.
Cocobolo is easy to work and forgiving to shape, making it a good choice for intricate handle designs or makers who do a lot of hand fitting. The lower density keeps the handle lightweight, which can be an advantage on larger blades. A good protective finish or stabilization is important for long-term durability.
Cocobolo is a premium rosewood for high-end builds. The extraordinary color range — from bright tangerine to near-black, often in the same blank — is unique in the knife world. It's self-lubricating, naturally durable, and a traditional material for fine knives. If you want the most visually complex, naturally beautiful handle wood available, cocobolo is a strong answer.
Grain & Figure
Cocobolo is a true rosewood with an extraordinary color range — orange, red, brown, purple, and black can all appear in the same blank, with complex swirling figure. The heartwood is fine-textured and takes an exceptional polish to near-glass smoothness. The colors are most vivid when freshly cut and mellow over time to deep, complex browns and reds. Each piece is entirely unique.
Stabilization & Treatment
Cocobolo is naturally rich in oils — the same oils that give it its distinctive luster and inherent durability also prevent stabilization resin from penetrating. This is a feature, not a limitation. Those natural oils protect the wood from moisture and give it built-in durability without any treatment. We stock Cocobolo raw only, which is the correct and traditional form for this species.
Recommended Finishes
Cocobolo's natural oils make adhesion challenging for many finishes. Allow freshly sanded surfaces to gas off for 24–48 hours before finishing, or wipe with acetone for better adhesion. Oil finishes work naturally with the wood's own oils. CA glue requires extra coats and patience. Many makers simply sand through 600–1200 grit and buff with paste wax — the natural surface polishes beautifully without any topcoat.
